NANCY SCOTTO
Nancy Scotto is a California native, sculptor and art teacher. She has an MFA in sculpture from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Scotto is interested in the human quality and connection to the vessel form, particularly in the torso shaped ceramic vessel known as the amphora. Her amphorae have a timeless and ancient look, with scarred surfaces that tell the story of their journey, including the rust and mold and memories of ship hulls and ocean water. Scotto says, “The vessels remain as life moves on, leaving their stories behind.”
Three large, distinctively shaped and archaic looking vessels are part of a site-specific installation planned for Foothill High School in Pleasanton California. These vessels serve as metaphors for the high school students themselves, on their journey through education. They represent learning in its purest form and the potential of the students and our system of public education. These seven-foot, nearly 1000-pound vessels were created with the help and support of Mission Clay Building Products, as part of their Art and Industry program in Phoenix Arizona.
